Previcox® Chewable Tablets

PREVICOX (firocoxib) Chewable Tablets is a veterinary prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to control pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs. This chewable barbeque-flavored tablet is also approved to help control postoperative pain and inflammation following soft-tissue or orthopedic surgery in dogs. Your veterinarian may administer PREVICOX anti-inflammatory before the procedure and recommend that your dog be treated for up to 3 days following the surgery after going home. PREVICOX anti-inflammatory comes in easy-to-give barbecue flavored chewable tablets. With consistent once daily administration for OA relief, most dogs show improvement within days. Talk to your veterinarian about including PREVICOX anti-inflammatory as part of your dog’s OA treatment plan to help relieve their pain and inflammation.

PREVICOX (firocoxib) Chewable Tablets are for use in dogs only. As a class, cyclooxygenase inhibitory NSAIDs like PREVICOX may be associated with gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver side effects. Dogs should be evaluated for pre-existing conditions and currently prescribed medications prior to treatment with PREVICOX, then monitored regularly while on therapy. Previcox chewable tablets are barbecue flavored.*

Previcox is available in two strengths, containing 57 mg or 227 mg of firocoxib per tablet.

Please ensure the selected product and quantity are appropriate for your pet, as recommended by your veterinarian. For current availability, please refer to the product selection above.

Previcox should be administered as directed by your veterinarian. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule.

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give more medication than prescribed or two doses at once. If you have questions about your pet’s prescribed dosing schedule (e.g., timing, interval), please contact your veterinarian.

Your veterinarian will carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of PREVICOX (firocoxib) Chewable Tablets and other treatment options before deciding to use PREVICOX. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with individual response. The recommended dosage of PREVICOX for oral administration in dogs is 2.27 mg/lb (5.0mg/kg) body weight once daily as needed for osteoarthritis and for 3 days as needed for postoperative pain and inflammation associated with soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery. The dogs can be treated with PREVICOX approximately two hours prior to surgery. The tablets are scored and dosage should be calculated in quarter tablet increments. Use split tablets within 30 days. PREVICOX can be administered with or without food.

Store in a cool, dry place at a controlled room temperature between 59° - 86°F. Brief periods up to 104°F are permitted. Keep this and all other medications in a secure location out of the reach of children and animals.

Exposure to extreme temperatures, light, or moisture can affect the integrity and effectiveness of medications. Always store this medication properly (e.g., away from the bathroom, kitchen sink, or other damp places), as outlined on the product label.

PREVICOX, like other NSAIDs, may cause some side effects. Serious side effects associated with NSAID therapy in dogs can occur with or without warning, and, in rare situations, result in death. The most common side effects associated with PREVICOX therapy involve the digestive tract (vomiting and decreased food consumption). Liver and kidney problems have also been reported with NSAIDs. Look for the following side effects that may indicate your dog is having a problem with PREVICOX:

It is important to stop the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog has a medical problem or is experiencing side effects while taking PREVICOX tablets.

Use of this product at doses above the recommended dosage in puppies less than seven months of age has been associated with serious adverse reactions, including death. Due to tablet sizes and scoring, dogs weighing less than 7 lb (3.2 kg) cannot be accurately dosed.

Do NOT administer this medication to animals with preexisting kidney or liver disease, or to animals that are currently experiencing decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea.

The safe use of PREVICOX Chewable Tablets in pregnant, lactating or breeding dogs has not been evaluated. Discuss the risks of using this medication with your veterinarian prior to use if your pet falls into one of these categories.

Do not administer this medication to animals with a known or suspected allergy/hypersensitivity to any NSAID, including firocoxib, or to any other ingredient in the formulation. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Please inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known sensitivities or allergies, especially to medications and supplements.

If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; and widespread hives or itching.

PREVICOX should not be given with other NSAIDs (for example, aspirin, carprofen, etodolac, deracoxib, meloxicam, or tepoxalin) or corticosteroids (for example, prednisone, cortisone, dexamethasone, or triamcinolone).

Additionally, the following drugs* may also have potential interactions with this medication: anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), antidiabetic agents (including insulins), beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, sotalol), blood pressure medications (e.g., amlodipine, enalapril, sildenafil, telmisartan), clopidogrel, cyclosporine, digoxin, diuretics (e.g., furosemide, spironolactone), fluconazole, fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin), methotrexate, pentoxifylline, SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine), toceranib (Palladia), and tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, clomipramine).

Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter (OTC) products that your pet is currently using. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosages or monitor your pet more closely.
