Vetmedin® Chewable Tablets

Product Information

Vetmedin® contains pimobendan, a benzimidazole-pyridazinone derivative, which is a non-sympathomimetic, non-glycoside inotropic drug with vasodilatative properties. Pimobendan exerts a stimulatory myocardial effect by a dual mechanism of action consisting of an increase in calcium sensitivity of cardiac myofilaments and inhibition of phosphodiesterase (Type III).

For

Dogs

Benefits

Vetmedin® is indicated for the management of the signs of mild, moderate, or severe congestive heart failure in dogs due to atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

Active Ingredients

pimobendan

Side Effects

Side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, changes in behavior (e.g. uneasiness, incoordination, convulsions), drinking or urinating excessively, or rapid beating of the heart. Contact your veterinarian if these adverse effects occur.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Usage

Vetmedin® should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian.

Cautions

Only for use in dogs with clinical evidence of heart failure.

Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. Effective treatment of congestive heart failure generally requires the use of multiple medications and pimobendan has been tested and safely used with various cardiac medications including angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and diuretics. The following list of medicines may potentially interact with pimobendan: other positive inotropes and drugs that are highly protein bound. Concurrent use of beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers may decrease the effects of pimobendan. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.

Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
